Essentially the Land and Marine based 8528 radio is the same. There are some basic differences however. Understanding these will make converting between the two easy. I have had a lot of requests lately for..." can you send me the amateur option for my 8528S.." As the Amateur Option profile I have is only for the Land Based Transceiver, installing it in a Marine radio will convert it.
Differences
1) The control head layout of some buttons varies slightly to allow for the different functionality of the two models.
2) EPROM is different. See below table for details
3) R76 on the RF Mixer board is not fitted to the 8528S. See the AM Mod Page for details of this resistor.
Removal of
this resistor will not affect the radio in either configuration.
This table explains the different options available in the EPROM for both models
| 8528 (LAND) | 8528S (MARINE) | OPTION |
| Optional | Optional (Note: I have never seen this option. I don't have it - please don't ask) |
Amateur Use |
| Standard (Australian models only) | Not Available | RFDS Emergency Call |
| Optional | Not Available | Selcall |
| Not Available | Standard | Marine Emergency Call |
| Not Available | Standard | AM on 2182Khz |
| Standard | Standard | USB operation |
| Optional | Optional | LSB operation |
| Not Available | Standard (requires channel programming) | Switchable TX Power |
| Optional | Optional | Morse Key |
Control Head Differences
Images of the two heads appear below. You can connect either head to either
radio. What function the switch
performs will depend on what EPROM is
fitted
| 8528 (LAND) | 8528S(MARINE) |
| Call (Selcall/Telcall) | Test (test of emergency function) |
| Not fitted | Red Emergency Button (Used in conjunction with TEST button) |
| Emgcy Call (RFDS - Australian models) | Not Fitted |
| USB/LSB Mode (LSB crystal must be fitted and channel must be programmed for option) |
TX Power (Channel must be programmed for option) |
| S'Call Mute (Mutes radio until valid selcall received) |
AM Mode (2182khz only) |
| Display (Displays options programmed to current channel etc..) |
2182 (Jumps to channel 1 -2182khz) |
NOTE: The switch positions that are blank in either control
head are still fitted to the switch membrane in
most cases. Pressing
the panel where the button should be will operate the switch.

These are the LOCAL control versions. The remote version of the 8528S MARINE
is identical to the local.
The Remote version of the 8528 LAND differs
slightly in switch layout. I have seen three different colours in
this head
(black, grey & brown). The grey & brown heads had slightly different
switch labelling to reflect
functionality on the now defunct Telstra/OTC
Radphone service in Australia.
